The Lewin Group Report on the Economic Impact of UMMC
Friday, July 20th, 2012
The Lewin Group was contracted by the Center for Mississippi Health Policy to conduct an economic analysis of UMMC. On October 30, 2006, Dr. Al Dobson and Mr. Paul Gallese presented their findings to members of the Legislature. In the presentation the researchers described their findings regarding UMMC’s economic impact in the Jackson Metropolitan Area as well as the entire state, the Medical Center’s role in supporting the state’s health care workforce, the institution’s challenges as a safety net provider, and its potential as an economic engine for the state. The study noted three specific opportunities for growth: expansion of cancer care services and transplants, enhancement of biomedical research, and the creation of a biotechnology research park. An Issue Brief summarizing their report and the full report are available online.
